The mechanical secret behind this lies in the pin stacks inside each cylinder: a locksmith pins each cylinder to shatter at two different shear lines — one for the change key and one for the master — so both keys operate the lock without compromising one another. When this is done correctly across an entire facility, access is granular, auditable by key possession, and immediately adjustable by re-keying a single cylinder rather than replacing hardware throughout the building.
